Đây không phải là một cuốn sách hay nhưng chứa đựng nhiều hiểu biết sâu sắc về lịch sử Việt Nam. Nó đi qua tiến trình cơ bản của lịch sử Việt Nam với rất nhiều câu chuyện sâu sắc. Tác giả cũng cố gắng giải thích một số niềm tin cơ bản của người dân thường mà tôi không thường thấy trong những cuốn sách khác về chủ đề này. Nó được xuất bản trong Chiến tranh Đông Dương lần thứ hai nên cuốn sách vẫn lạc quan về kết quả cuộc chiến ở miền Nam Việt Nam. Cuốn sách này rất dễ đọc và nó sẽ không làm bạn chán.

The Vietnam conflict is far more complicated than a simple clash between the competing ideologies of communism and Western liberal democracy. The forces at play in Vietnam are global in scope, involving virtually every kind of trouble that can plague developing lands. They encompass all the problems of countries recently emerged from colonial rule combined with those of peoples undergoing transi- tion from traditional to modern societies under the impact of Western technological civilization. Both North and South Vietnam are hindered by traditional attitudes and customs and shortages of skills and capital needed for modernization. Both are troubled by factionalism among their elites, the members of which avoid responsibility, a trait inherited from the traditional society and magnified by colonial rule.

In the South, apart from the Viet Cong, dozens of cliques and fac- tions jockey for popular favor, offering solutions to problems as varied as their numbers. Few have broad support or show any capacity for the type of compromise necessary in a working democracy. This political scene is further complicated by regional rivalries and by competition between factious religious groups and subgroups. While the Constitu- ent Assembly elected in September, 1966, has brought new young blood into the political scene and the Assembly has shown more inde- pendence and capacity than any of its predecessors, it is too early to evaluate what this means for the future.

In spite of the appearance of unity and discipline, which the Viet- namese Communist (Lao Dong) party strives to present to the world, the Communists of both the North and the South are also divided. As Vietnamese they desire in varying degrees to retain a national identity within the Communist world, yet they are torn by the pulling and haul- ing of the Sino-Soviet dispute in which both sides seek their allegiance.
